What is the difference between shoegaze and dream pop?
Shoegaze bands are more of an assault, a wall of sound, while there is more empty space in dream pop—allowing more room for melody and counter-melody, whether on vocals, keyboards, or guitars.
How do you record dream pop?
Compress lightly to keep a steady level, and use gentle EQ to bring out the body of the voice and avoid any high-end sibilance or harshness. By definition, dream pop calls for some spacey reverbs and echo effects, but it’s easy to get carried away and end up with a muddy mix.

Why is it called shoegaze?
The name comes from the heavy use of effects pedals, as the performers were often looking down at their pedals during concerts. My Bloody Valentine’s album Loveless (1991) is often seen as the genre’s defining release, with other prominent shoegaze groups including Slowdive, Ride, Lush, and Chapterhouse.

The term “dreampop” was coined in the late 1980s by Alex Ayuli of A.R. Kane to describe his band’s eclectic sound, which blended ethereal dub production, distorted guitar, and drum machine among other influences.
